Ok, this is minor, I know, but I have terrible acne on my chin. The np says it's common with die off, but this is the first I've experienced that is so horrible! I can't even cover it with make up, and when I use teenager drying products, it makes the skin around the zits flaking and itchy. (Sigh.) Ideas? Has anyone else dealt with this?

Hi alyeska!-
I also have a lot of issues with acne. Around 1 year ago I was using Byron White A.P. This is an herbal formula for parasites, Candida, and mold. I broke out with severe acne all over my back, shoulders, abdomen, and thighs. I showed my back to my LLMD, she thought it was due to die off of parasites. My Lyme friendly GP had no idea, but said to me, "Wow! That is impressive!" And now the new doctor I am seeing for mold sensitivity thinks that my break out is due to mold. UGH!!!!!! LOL!
I think that it is getting a little better since I started mold treatment.
Here are the things that I have tried:
1. rub hydrogen peroxide on area - this might also dry out the skin more 2. over the counter acne creams 3. Apple Cider Vinegar 4. Epsom salt baths 5. Coconut oil- this can cause acne for some people
I personally never noticed any improvements from the things that I tried. Just thought that I would share incase you want to try any of them. Maybe someone else will have some ideas of what worked for them.

Oh, boy, am I ever in this group too! I have had quite a bit of acne all my life. All the doctors have ever said was that it was "interesting" - but that didn't help much!!! It was my TCM doc that I saw for a year when I first started with herbal treatments that clued me into what was going on, then my own research and the schooling I'm getting now has 'revealed' even more to me on what's going on for many of us. It is the die off, and our liver is pushing the toxins that it can't deal with due to an overload of them out to our skin to detox out. Now, while it's a pain to deal with, that's pretty cool that our liver has a back up system for detoxing!! YAY!!! (Lol! Sorry, I do get a little carried away with this stuff, I know!)
So, I've tried a lot of things over the years to deal with my acne, but for me has been dry skin brushing combined with good liver detoxing. It takes a while to make a lot of difference, but it's been the only thing that has been working consistently for me.
For some of the worst pimples, deep and large, a drop of tea tree oil helps a lot. I use dandelion root tincture for detoxing my liver, and my fake coffee (which has barley, chicory, and rye) also helps with my kidneys and liver, plus I use an all natural liver flush when needed (which I haven't needed in a couple of years now, as I've been able to stay on top of my liver health).
And, the dry skin brushing. This allows our skin to push out even more toxins, so at first, you could experience an increase in acne, but it will diminish as your body works on getting to lower levels of stored toxins.
Of course, it may not be that easy for everyone, but it's worth a try!

I think I have some tea tree oil. I just hate the smell so much that I put it away! I guess it's good that I am having die off. The ozone sauna must be doing something because I'm not on any other bug killer at the moment. (I stopped the samento for a while since Thanksgiving was going to be so stressful. Three teenagers is really pushing me over the edge too. I'm getting very little sleep. My dang 17 year old! He's being such a pain. Aargh.) I've been using the Yogi tea, baking soda baths, and lemon water, along with the IP6 and zeolite every few days if I'm feeling good.

I was taking a little coconut oil before... I wonder if that was what caused it, or if it's the ozone? I'm just so sick of all of these weird things happening to me! Seriously, acne at my age?!?! That used to be a benefit of getting older! That was one nice thing about antibiotics when they were actually working too. I never had any zits, and I never got sick for such a long time! Then it all went to h311 in a hand basket. I'm. Just. So. Tired.

Yes, use it on your face, acne or not. I get acne all over my body - except my feet and hands! LOL! But it never gets too bad, as I keep doing the dry brushing and making sure that my liver is detoxing (as well as other organs) very well. Remember, the skin is kind of like the last thing to get into a lot of detoxing, until the body needs to just 'unload' more toxins somewhere. So, take milk thistle or dandelion root to help keep the liver detoxing well to begin with.
**I can't take milk thistle because of a ragweed allergy.

Hi alyeska!-
I am sorry, in my post, I wanted to say that I used coconut oil and apple cider vinegar on my skin.
According to some of the things that I have read, coconut oil has properties in it to make it antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal.
After a shower, I would rub a little coconut oil on my body. I was hoping that it would help wit my acne.
I am not sure if ingesting coconut oil would lead to acne?

I use coconut oil as my only moisturiser after bathing, and for me, it definitely has helped keep the pimples from being so bad. I also ingest coconut oil (it has sooo many benefits!), but for me it didn't lead to more pimples once my body got used to it. I think I had a small increase in them at first though.
When I need to reduce the oil on my face, I use witch hazel, which would be about the same as apple cider vinegar, I believe.

I keep NOW Bentonite Clay Powder in my kitchen for all sorts of reasons. Anyway, I mixed some clay powder with water to make a paste for a friend's son who had terrible acne and he would apply the paste every night and lo and behold, it cleared up his acne. I use it when I accidently get a bit of poison ivy from being in the wilderness, yeah!! The clay paste always helps with the itching, etc.

Hope this helps, Denise I am ordering some today! They cleared up a bit but left scarring, and now they're back! I feel SO sorry for teenagers who have really bad acne. I mean, I'm in my 40's and secure with myself, and I still feel like I look like a monster with these giant things in my chin. I never had it this bad as a kid! On Friday, the np at the doc's office said it's still die off. She said, "Never underestimate this bacteria and the power of herbs." She really thinks this is still from the high doses of cat's claw/samento! I'm not starting it again until these freakish things are GONE. They're so big that I'm going to have to start naming them!

(You know I wanted to use a different word than "junk" there! Ha! I'm trying to keep it clean.) Today I have a very obnoxious Lily Allen tune in my head that I keep singing to myself. My mother is rolling over in her grave!

None of it is working, but thanks so much for the suggestions. A new crop just busted out, same place across the chin. Make-up just won't even cover these when I have to go out! NP says it's still die off, and I've been off samento for weeks. Just in time to look good for the holidays, right? Lol! I'm so vain. Seriously, this really is the least of my worries at the moment, but I hate it. It makes me look sick, and I'm still in the Lyme closet!

I'm so sorry Alyeska! I do know how frustrating that is!! I used to have pimples constantly around the sides of my mouth and chin. My TCM doc told me it was from my intestines needing to detox more. I also discovered that the better I got at detoxing, the clearer my skin is. Anytime I slip up with my detoxing, or add in new treatments or raise a dose though - it comes back. My weakest point is my intestines, so it's to be expected now that I know what's causing it.
The other thing is that it takes a while (we are all different on this too, depending on how well your body detoxes), for the body to rid itself of the overload of toxins. From what I'm reading in school, acne is generally from liver overload, so I would encourage you to concentrate on detoxing your liver and keep the intestines working well. If you need suggestions, you know to just ask! I'm sure that I'm not the only one that has this issue (okay, I hope not!! LOL!)

I just ordered som activated charcoal for intestinal detox. Any suggestions for that would be helpful too. Thanks again! I now have two more kinds of detox tea with dandelion root that I bought Friday. NP said not to do the Yogi detox every day.

I now have two more kinds of detox tea with dandelion root that I bought Friday. NP said not to do the Yogi detox every day. Really? I wonder why your NP said not to use it daily? I have been for the last 20 - 24 months. It's helped detox my kidneys, liver and other organs pretty well, in my humble opinion. Are you taking milk thistle? That's the easiest and most popular way to help detox the liver. I'm allergic to ragweed enough that using milk thistle only gives me more liver pain (stupid allergies!), so I've had to be a little creative in order to be sure that my liver stays detoxed well. Basically, I just use Dandelion tincture (that I make myself, and I'd be happy to explain to anyone that's interested - it's easy, I promise!), and of course, the Yogi brand tea. When I feel like I need a detoxing boost for my liver, I use an all natural liver/gall bladder flush (and I don't have a gall bladder, so it's safe for everyone). I'll post what and how to use it below. Others use glutathione, which is specific to helping the liver detox as well. I don't use glutathione, as it's usually made with soy (another allergy of mine, but it's particularly nasty), so I use ALA (Alpha Lipoic Acid), which is a precursor to glutathione. There are a myriad of other herbs that can also help detox the liver, such as burdock root and others though. Those are just a few that I'm aware of. Okay, so here is the recipe that I use when my liver needs an extra boost of detoxing: In the morning, 1/2 hour before any food, mix: 1 cup fresh squeezed citrus juice - can be orange or grapefruit . A couple of good squeezes of lemon or lime juice. 1 - 2 cloves of fresh squeezed garlic 1 tablespoon of olive oil. A few drops of fresh squeezed ginger juice Do 2 cycles of 7 - 10 days each, with a 3 day break in between the 2 cycles - OR until you see plenty of bile (dark green color) in your stools. And, yes, that first gulp of the first glass of this gives me the willies!! But, it works so very well for me, that I'm committed to keep using it when I need to. You do get used to it, I promise! LOL!

I tend to grind my teeth when stressed. Lol! I have clementines, and I love garlic. I've been drinking organic ginger tea. I honestly don't have the energy to make anything like this at the moment. How the heck do you make fresh squeezed ginger juice? XD

Ha ha ha!! That's what I asked!! "fresh squeezed ginger juice???" You only need a few drops really, but I like ginger so I used to use a garlic squeezer (whatever that gadget is called!) and put my ginger in there, give it a good squeeze (cut across the fibers in the ginger) and then dump the ginger juice and the squeezed ginger into the mix!
And, when I need this and I just didn't have the energy to squeeze enough oranges, I would buy my OJ - fresh, not from concentrate, organic and no sugar added. Boy, did that cut down the work load!
I would encourage you to talk to your doctor about milk thistle to help your liver. If they say no, then find out what they would have you use - because you DO need something, believe me. A lot of toxins are created when the bacteria die off, and our systems can really get overloaded with toxins. Our bodies can only tolerate so many toxins running around loose in there, so we must be able to detox well enough to keep the levels low to keep our symptoms a bit lower and to be able to complete treatments.
This really is not something many doctors understand (it's not taught in medical schools usually), so yours may not either. If that's the case, you will have to detox on your own, without guidance from your doctor.

I have some that should be coming in the mail tomorrow... that's for intestinal detoxing though, isn't it? My brain isn't working. Bentonite clay arriving tomorrow too for my little (actually big!) friends on my face. I've named some of them now. Billy Bob and Bubba are the two biggest. It's driving my kids crazy that I won't just pop them, but I have scarring from the crop from last week! Ok, TMI, I know. I'm so tired that I have no filter! The coconut oil that I'm now using after OTC zit cream doesn't seem to be doing anything except just making me look slimy. I'm so very attractive right now! Lol! Well, you can definitely look at me these days and say, "That is one sick person!"

Well, you can definitely look at me these days and say, "That is one sick person!" LOL! Well, know that you are far from the only Lyme patient that is having issues with pimples!!! And no worries, I don't think pimple talk (lol) is TMI!!! Heck, we're just getting started!! LOL! What if you bought 2 things of O.J., told your kids that they have one to drink, but the other one is yours because you need it to help detox your liver? Would that be any help? I think it's a good idea to wait until after the holidays to start something new, as long as you are managing okay now. You would know within a few days if you are allergic to it. What happens for me is after 2 days of use, my liver starts hurting so bad that if I don't stop the milk thistle then, the pain begins to radiate up into my chest and shoulders. But, that's almost certainly because I also have a pretty serious allergy to ragweed. Which is just no fun - during 'wet years' the ragweed on our road actually blooms twice a year. Ick!!! At least I no longer get bronchitis twice a year from it!!! While both the milk thistle and charcoal help us detox - they work in different ways, and on different parts of our body. The milk thistle helps the liver detox better, and the charcoal helps 'mop up' toxins in the blood. So while charcoal use will help lighten the load on the liver, it won't help detox the liver. (Boy, I hope that makes sense!) Although I will use charcoal for drying the larger pimples out (put some on a bandaid and put the bandaid on my face before I go to bed), I have also used a drawing salve (brand name of "Prid") and that's worked well on some of the larger ones that were actually classified as boils/carbuncles. And remember, a little tiny dab will do ya with the coconut oil! It's the only moisturizer I use on my face and body (although my feet get something different every once in a while) and I'm always amazed at how little it takes.
