Mission:
To flood our senators with letters stating that we want a congressional hearing of those with conflict of interests
and that the funding to these individuals should stop.
Importance:
To inform our Senators that we would like to see forward movement in the research and development of a cure
for Lyme disease. In order to do this, we need to get the scientists that are working on Lyme disease, who have
conflicts of interest, to be removed and held accountable for letting Lyme disease and coinfections go mostly
untreated and undiagnosed.
Comments:
To make changes, it takes many steps and this is just one of them, but an important one. Again, if you have
another area regarding Lyme disease or coinfections that you feel needs to be addressed, we encourage you to
please do so in an additional letter sent separately. It is only through multiple voices, heard over and over again,
that we will see progress and change with this disease.
Instructions:
1. Print off PDF (you may want to print off the first two pages to save paper)
2. Put the name of the Senator on the top of the letter that you are sending to
3. Sign your name on the bottom of the letter (If you would like a response you can put your address or email
in the space provided)
3. Find the address to your Senator starting on page 3, they are listed by state
4. Send the letter out in a green envelope
*Feel free to send the letter and call the offices if you are comfortable speaking over the phone.
*Each State has two senators; we encourage you to send letters to both.
Dear Senator _________________________:
I am writing to you regarding the serious mishandling of Lyme disease and other coinfections by Scientists, who have a conflict of interest. They have caused hundreds of thousands of individuals to receive ineffective testing and treatment.
The Centers for disease control, CDC, is currently a party to a lawsuit for purposely hindering effective Lyme disease testing (Federal Claims Court Case #18-686C). The CDC continues to ignore the ineffectiveness of their current two-tiered testing system. They insist on it being the only approved testing for Lyme disease, even
with evidence to the contrary of its failures.1 Also, the CDC does admit, in one of its reports, that “laboratory testing (of Lyme disease) may be inaccurate,”2 even though their website indicates otherwise.3
It should be noted, that employees within the CDC, hold the patent for the current “approved” testing for Lyme disease (EP2805168A1). There has also been concern from scientists within the CDC itself, who have pointed out issues within the CDC. This group calls themselves the CDC Scientist Preserving Integrity, Diligence and Ethics in Research (CDC-SPIDER).4 They feel their mission is being influenced by outside parties, and they are being
pressured to perform unethical practices.
In addition, the CDC influences how doctors currently treat for Lyme disease. Until recently, they pointed physicians towards using the IDSA guidelines. The IDSA has also had several instances, in which their ethics have been called into question. The article, “The Infectious Diseases Society of America Lyme Guidelines:
A Cautionary Tale About the Development of Clinical Practice Guidelines,” outlines in detail, the issues that lead to an initial investigation of antitrust laws against the IDSA. That investigation was concluded in 2008.5 The IDSA is also again, in a lawsuit that started in 2017 for breaking antitrust laws (Civil Action NO. 17-cv-190). Along with several scientists from the IDSA, multiple insurance companies are also being named in the lawsuit. The lawsuit brought into light, the conflict of interest of IDSA scientists, who were being paid by insurance companies to write treatment guidelines that protected the insurance companies’ interest.
In conclusion, the CDC has had decades to improve Lyme disease testing and treatment with their federal funds and they have done little, to nothing, with the money. At this point, increasing federal funding will not change the course of this disease process, or the science behind it, as long as there are those within the CDC
and IDSA who have conflict of interest. I am asking for a congressional hearing, of those who have mishandled Lyme disease and that the federal funding to those with these conflicts of interest, cease. Instead, I would like to see non-biased scientists, who have no conflict of interest, that would push testing and treatment
forward in hopes of finding a cure for Lyme disease. Ultimately, the CDC and IDSA have failed to do this.
Sincerely,
