"Transfusion-transmitted babesiosis leading to severe hemolysis in two patients with sickle cell anemia" link to article Abstract The intracellular parasites Babesia microti and Babesia duncani can be transmitted by blood transfusion and cause severe life-threatening hemolytic anemia in high-risk patients, including those with sickle cell disease. The rarity of the diagnosis, as well as its similar clinical presentation to delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction, may lead to a delay in diagnosis, as well as inappropriate treatment with steroids or other immunosuppressive agents. The morbidity caused by this disease in especially vulnerable populations justifies the need for a universal blood-screening program in endemic areas.

I'm not posting this article because I'm thinking we have several members with sickle cell disease, but because they are openly admitting that B. microti and B. duncani can be transmitted by blood transfusion!
This is information we need to understand, because if we need blood for any reason, we need to know everything else that may come along with that blood transfusion!
And, let's all remember - do NOT donate blood and do NOT donate organs! We don't want to leave another person to living with these infections!!!

Well, you don't have to convince me not to donate blood. I have a fear of needles...so this gives me a good excuse and I don't have to feel guilty anymore. ..and wouldn't you know it - a recent blood draw, the lab tech hit a nerve and it still hasn't completely healed.

I never donated blood in my life. I diffidently won't now! I won't do blood transfusions either. Never did. Or donate my organs to anyone. To much in our blood donations to feel safe in getting 1. My brother in-law needs a kidney, they came to me and I said no, because of my lyme and confections, O boy, my family said it's because I don't want to and I use my lyme disease to get out of everything!

It's really sad that people simply do not see the dangers that we see. I guess they wish to live the 'good life' we have? ? (eye roll) I think you have likely read all my complaints about lab techs and drawing blood over on healingwell, Girlie? Boy!! I get some of the worst looks, and I sure wouldn't want to know what they say behind my back - but dang!!! It's MY freaking arm people!!! I'm the one that has to live with whatever damage you choose to do, not you!! If they had ever experienced some of the things I have simply from a blood draw, I KNOW they would change their tune. I now direct every single lab tech when they go to draw blood. If I have to have an IV started, I will only allow the best they have on the floor start my IV. I simply don't care what they think any more. I've had to deal with too many of their "oops" moments over the years.

I did phlebotomy for a living for a while, I was good at drawing blood. It's easy, but some of these nuts just don't care how they do it, just as long as they get blood out of u. I am a hard stick, my veins will collapse and hard to fine a good 1 after I yelled at them for sticking me 2xs I said NO more, they go for my hands! I would freak out on them, NOT that needle, u r not bruising me! That is to big! lol... or u will never get blood out of me that way! lmao! boy did I piss them off! They have to use a small child's needle to do my hands, plus hold my vein still to get blood! O gosh I had 1 freak on me... I told her, I know what I am talking about, I was 1 of u, o we went at it! I turned her ass in! heee heee big problems when that happens! I am a huge B? and a PIA when it comes to drawing my blood trust me. I only found 1 lady in town that I will let draw my blood, I didn't even feel her put the needle in! I also what to see them pull that needle out of a seal package too! RULE #1 that most "patience" dont know when drawing blood, is 2 sticks only, than get someone else. YOU! have to right to refuse them taking your blood the 3 th x! I have seen a lot of blood and blood test and the list of diseases in our blood is like OMG! Some of the test that came through, it was like what in the world is this? People that travel bring back some unknown disease with them, all I say is NO thank u!

Agreed, DJ - I only allow a child's needle to be used - usually a 'butterfly' needle. And that is generally used on the back of the hand.
My veins not only roll, but will fold over too.
I've had (only ONE time) them go 'fishing' for the vein, so that they get it in the same 'stick' - but I won't allow that either. That's how I've had some of my biggest bruises!!! Some have 'filled' the palm of my hand because the bruise was pushing out so far!!! That's painful!!!!
I no longer care about their feeling though, since they don't care about what kind of a mess they leave me to deal with. I had one gal that I told about my veins eyes get real big and leave the room! LOL! I thought I had scared her off and was a little concerned about being able to have the surgery I was about to have! LOL! But, I was reassured that she was going to get the Pediatric nurse that was an expert at getting blood from not only squirmy kids, but ones that had trouble finding the veins too! That was a blessing!!!

After it happened I called the head office of the lab and told them what happened and added my husbands bad experience with the same person. They told me she was going to be retrained.
The next time I went I was prepared to walk out if she showed up to do the draw - but I got my favorite gal - barely feel it. She told me that the tech should have pulled the needle out when I got the pain. It does more damage the longer you keep it in. She asked if I told her it hurt. Oh yes - I went "Ahhhh!! That hurts all the way down to my fingers " and she just continued.
