I knew I would find this article again!! No matter how hard they try to hide these little tidbits!!!! EM RASH IS DIAGNOSTIC FOR BORRELIA INFECTION “Erythema migrans is the only manifestation of Lyme disease in the United States that is sufficiently distinctive to allow clinical diagnosis in the absence of laboratory confirmation.” Clin Infect Dis 2006; 43:1101 (2006 IDSA Guidelines) Clinical Infectious Disease article And, to back that up, here is this article: link"For community physicians practicing in high-risk geographic areas, the diagnosis of Lyme disease remains a challenge. Failure to recognize erythema migrans or alternatively, viral-like presentations without a rash, can lead to missed or delayed diagnosis of Lyme disease, ineffective antibiotic treatment, and the potential for late manifestations." "The hallmark of early disease is a localized skin infection, erythema migrans (EM), which occurs at the site of the bite of an infected tick. Accurate identification of this rash is essential to a correct diagnosis, as serology is negative in 60% of patients early in infection when initial evaluation is likely to occur [4]." #4 is as follows, from our "friend", Dr. Gary Wormser: Early Lyme Disease"Erythema migrans is the most common clinical manifestation of Lyme disease." Know, we happen to know that in reality, only a portion of Lyme patients actually ever see an EM rash (I have yet to see one on me!), but this does help those that do present with one! We 'caught' the IDSA saying it's diagnostic of Lyme!

I never had 1 either. I found the tick, it only left a red tiny dot on me. With in a matter of hrs, I was swollen up with huge red welt like things. My knee was so swollen I couldn't walk on it. My toes cramped to deformity and my hands. Few other things happen. I was like holy s??? I know what is going on Lyme disease! I had a friend that had it n died from it. But I forgot to spray 1 time! working outside in my new home first wkend there! and here I am. BUT I have come along way since those days!

Yes, you have, DJ!!! You have come a very long way and so has both of our understanding of these infections! I've never seen a bulls eye rash on me - Bart rashes and an occasional Babesia rash, yes - but I've also never seen the RMSF rash on me - and I have had that (CDC positive for Lyme and RMSF). The first symptoms I had were from RMSF, but no rash, which is a less often seen issue. There is one possible time that I had the RMSF rash, back in the early 1980's, but I've never seen anything like it since. Those that see a bulls eye rash are quickly becoming the minority too, more and more people are reporting Lyme without a bulls eye, although they may or may not have another type of rash. But, it still remains that the IDSA and ILADS both say that the Bulls eye rash is completely diagnostic of Lyme disease, because there is nothing else that causes such a rash. "EM RASH IS DIAGNOSTIC FOR BORRELIA INFECTION" Erythema migrans is the only manifestation of Lyme disease in the United States that is sufficiently distinctive to allow clinical diagnosis in the absence of laboratory confirmation.” Clin Infect Dis 2006; 43:1101 (2006 IDSA Guidelines) IDSA facts for physicians ILADS treatment guidelines: Erythema migrans (EM) is diagnostic of Bb infection, but is present in fewer than half. What's really crazy is that I seem to pick up most of my ticks not from working outside in the yard or garden, but when I go into town!!!
