This morning I had to force myself to turn the computer on....My anxiety has taken over my mind. I cannot concentrate on anything else except my never ending flu type symptoms....For a brief period of time I thought I might be getting better, but now all my symptoms are not allowing my mind to think....Maybe I am going insane....I am so depressed I have to force myself to get up in the morning.... I am losing faith in my herbalist....I will try a phone consultation next week and see.....Blood work negative again. I start to doubt what illness I have....No one has any answers...My primary looks at my new rashes (flat red spots on my chest) and says they look like bug bites....Assembly line medicine jerk.... Found a llmd close (they want $850.00 for an appt.....We cannot afford that. I told them there fee was immoral)...Keep reading on the Buhner web site and his book, but I cannot make a decision, my thinking is so disoriented..... I keep praying.... How do I know what herbs to take or not take ? Should I just go ahead and get the basic protocol herbs and start on my own despite what the herbalist is telling me ? Should I treat for co infections ? All my symptoms are from the neck - up....except for the chest rash & night sweats.... I feel embarrassed to post here because so many people have much more severe problems... 2 years ago c diff destroyed my calm about illness and now I am paying the price...I am having great difficulty keeping my head above water.....

Well, I got the original post moved at least!! The other post was just saying that he posted in the wrong section - but at least I have the ability to move posts on this site!!! So, first of all, I'm so very sorry, Acres!!! Looking at your past posts, you started a new tonic back on December 16th - and you herxed quite a bit. Are you still on this tonic? Are you still battling that herx? Until you get this herx under control, it's never advisable to add in more herbs or raise a dose of anything. You just don't want the herxing to get out of control. I know that it feels like it will be never ending if you take the time your body is insisting on you taking - but it really is for the best. The other option you have is to explain again what all you are taking (and any notable reactions) for us and we can help you determine if you are simply trying to do too much, if you are stuck in a herx, or if you need to do something different. No guarantees that we can be of help, but we can sure try!! We have some great minds that are posting here!

Hi Scott,
Hang on, friend. Don't give up. You can get better. I'm sorry you're having such a tough time right now. I get it, trust me. But, there is a way forward.
What have you been treating? Lyme and co-infections, or just Lyme? Night sweats certainly make one think of Babesia. I would suggest that if you haven't treated co-infections at all that you should talk to your LLMD about doing that. They can be such a barrier to healing.
I think I successfully treated Babesia with 6 months of Mepron/Zith. But, with 12 months of total treatment under my belt, I have yet to address Bartonella (at all) or deal with Lyme in all of its variations. I'm using Bicillin to treat Lyme, and I think it's making a difference there, but my Bartonella is really surging as a result, and I know I need to start treating that or I will be stuck.
Is there another herbalist that you could consult with? I understand your apprehension about going at it alone, even with Buhner's book at your side. I feel better with a guide. Though I know Trav and others have managed just fine by themselves.
I wonder if there might be another naturopath or herbalist that you could talk to. Are you in New England, by chance? I've worked with a couple in NH and MA that might be able to help, and they are not too expensive.
Please don't get hung up on the bloodwork. It's just useless much of the time. All of mine has been CDC negative, and I had the bullseye rash. So, let that go and don't beat yourself up about posting. This is the place to come and share your concerns! We are all struggling with these infections in different degrees. But, the bottom line is they have all changed our lives. And, we want our lives back. Everyone has a right to feel frustrated about that.
I don't have a magic bullet answer for you. But, I wanted to say I understand how you're feeling. I think a new perspective could help, and considering co-infections, if you haven't already, might be really helpful.
Keep the faith! Kelly

And, yes, of course, as Trav said, I didn't know your treatment history. But, I herxed on Bicillin for 3 weeks. An extended herx could be much of the reason for your not feeling well, and discouraged state of mind. I get so hopeless when I'm stuck in a herx!

I failed to address this, by Acres: "I feel embarrassed to post here because so many people have much more severe problems... 2 years ago c diff destroyed my calm about illness and now I am paying the price...I am having great difficulty keeping my head above water....."
First of all, I want everyone to know that this is not a competition, where only those that are "the worst" have a reason to complain, ask questions, or vent about their life being changed (as KB said), but instead, let's understand we are all VERY sick and need help and support!! This is the worst many of us have ever been, so there are no "but she's/he's worse off than I am", because that isn't true. While some may be in more danger than others, we are all sick, and all need help and support.
And, I totally get it about trying to 'keep the calm' after being seriously ill like that. While it was these infections that brought me to that point, it's still the same feeling - a type of PTSD reaction to being that ill again. And I still struggle with those PTSD type of feelings myself, even though I have been working through it slowly for many years. I'm better than I was, because I can now talk about that time in my life - but I've got a ways to go before I stop having panic attacks about it.

Hi my friends, this site & my wife are my life boats at this moment in time.... Night sweats again last night & anxiety through the roof... Can herxing cause night sweats ?
Here is my protocol : Tincture with cryptolepis, Echinacea root & propolis, 1/2 teaspoon 3 times a day Red Root 1/2 teaspoon once a day Andrograhis complex (each tablet has - andro 100mg, holy basil oil 10mg, holy basil herb 100mg, Echinacea root 125mg) 1 tab. twice a day. Immune complex 2 capsules 3 times a day (has bovine liver, veal bone, spleen etc...) Thymex 2 pills twice a day (has bovine thymus cytoscol extract, magnesium citrate) Immune Factor vitamins...
Generally feel very exhausted (ill feeling like you are getting the flu) all the time & light headed.... Pain behind eyes, minor headache comes and goes.... flat red spots on chest come and go..Red pimple like rash on chest, arms and shoulders come and go Occasional night sweats... Very bad anxiety....sleeping is difficult... Nodes under jaw always slightly enlarged. Also node in front of left ear enlarged, all sometimes painful...Pain extends to the front and under my ears....maybe in the jaw... Occasional rib area pain... Severe depression
One positive note, after I started taking the crypt. tincture my red irritated throat improved....
Lemon water 3 times a day, foot bathes 2 times a day, dry brush and shower 2 times a day.... Yogi tea, strong ginger tea, raw apple cidar vinegar....
I think that's it....
Thank you SO MUCH !!

Hi acres, just wanted to say I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time.
I know how the mental stuff ,especially anxiety & depression can make it difficult to get through every second...
I really don’t have any suggestions, I’m pretty out of it myself at the moment... plus I know others with more experience will be along soon.
Just wanted to say I’m thinking of you.. Hope you get some relief soon!

Yes! Sweating can be part of a herx.... And I do see in your protocol - that you're taking Cryptolepis for Babesia. The sweating and anxiety could be a babs herx. Since my Mepron treatment, I'm not sweating much...hardly at all...(so far). But,when I was on the mepron...holy moly..I was sweating a lot...and would get early morning waking anxiety. Hang in there -

I"m not sure if you are up to doing this or not - but if you can add in the dates you started those things, and if and when you know herxing started and stopped and, also, has herxing ever stopped for you? - it would give us a timeline we may be able to see things in.
Anxiety, or an increase in anxiety can be part of a herx as well. I generally have low levels of anxiety that I deal with, making my moods change fairly often throughout the day at times, and I get grouchy when pain gets added in - but if it was part of my herxing, wow!! Like night and day!
My anxiety levels used to sky rocket and I would pretty much shut down. I just couldn't function during a bad one. And they would strike kind of whenever, but it was sure to happen if I exposed myself to one of my triggers, which usually were things like perfumes (in products and on people!), fluorescent lighting (because they have a 'flicker' to them, which messes with the brain for some), loud noises, big crowds (no shopping when everyone else was!), and a few other things.
I would encourage you to watch to see if you can figure out your triggers, then avoid them the best you can. As I discovered, I couldn't avoid grocery stores, so I wore a big floppy hat (to protect myself from the fluorescent lighting), ear buds to a MP3 player with soft, soothing music playing (to protect myself from the other noises/bells/buzzers) and then adamantly avoided certain isles in the stores - anything with lots of perfumes in them, or things that I could smell. And, I avoided people that I could smell their perfume or cologne before they even got close to me. That one still affects me negatively, but now it's mostly nausea at least.
Also, it's just as important to find things that calm your anxiety - painting, wood carving, playing with a dog/cat, doing jigsaw puzzles or whatever! And do be sure to keep looking for more things that help ease the anxiety - even if it's a good movie. Then, be sure to use those things to help keep your anxiety at a lower level to begin with, and continue to work on avoiding any triggers you find you have.
If you still need some help with the anxiety even with doing those things - then please do go get the help you need. I started out with Pharma anxiety meds, but eventually switched over to herbals with that as well.

Hang in there - I’m with you, Acres and Girlie. I’m having night sweats, depression, and MAJOR anxiety too. I’m hardly sleeping, and I’m over-reacting to EVERYTHING. That’s a horrible thing to do with three teenagers in the house! I’m still searching for something to help too because it seems I’m just getting worse no matter what I do. At the moment I’m procrastinating because I need to get in the bath and wash my hair which is just so incredibly tiring and painful for me. We usually go to Church Sunday evenings, so I really need to try to do it if I want to go to church, which I think is important, but it hurts and is exhausting. I’m praying for you. I totally get what you’re saying. I’m starting to feel desperate too because of the night sweats and lack of sleep. I just want this to end. Everything, even just sitting or laying down, is painful. Keep up up the hope. Try to find joy in little things. I pray that you find a doctor who charges less. That one is a crook...$850 for an appointment?!? I want to spit on him! I also agree with KB... don’t get hung up on blood work. My LLMD would tell you that you obviously have it, so just keep treating it however you can. God bless you, friend. Hang in there.

As absurd as it sounds - $600 - $800 for a LLMD is not really out of range. Some charge as much as $1200. My adrenal and thyroid doc, who is "just" a 'regular' MD, but dropped out of taking insurance, charged $600 for the first visit, and then it was $150 for subsequent visits. Have you considered going "no poo" for a while? While I do use baking soda on my hair occasionally to get rid of hairspray and such, it's not good to use all the time, but here are some easy recipes for a different, natural way to wash your hair: The Hidden Problem with “No Poo” (And What to Do Instead) I've been wanting to try this one: DIY Wet/Dry Spray Shampoo for Light or Dark Hair Or maybe you can get one of your teens to help you wash your hair??? (Just thought I'd ask!) For pain, you may wish to consider something like passion flower (Passiflora incarnata). I've recently made my own from wild harvested passion flower vines, although I did not include the flowers this year (I was after the passion fruit!), but do intend to use the flowers next year (hoping for a good crop!!). Anyway, I've been using this for a few months now (3 or so?) and have realized that while all of my pain is not gone by any stretch of the imagination, it has definitely been lowered. This is the best article I can find, without it being too technical with 'herbalist stuff': Passion Flower - University of Michigan For anyone that wishes to see the "herbalist stuff" edition: Michael Moore, Herbalist This is a PDF - Passion flower is on page 48 along with the 'energetics' of the herb. Now, the best part of this is that I can actually explain what, according to Michael Moore, Passion flower affects and if it's a positive or negative impact!! LOL! (I LOVE this stuff! and I'm a definite fan of Michael Moore!)

Hi, The night sweats started in mid November after I began taking my 1st tincture of bindens formula and teasel root. I notice them when I wake up in the middle of the night.... The intense anxiety started about the same time period and only occurs in the early morning...or if I stay in the house and dwell on my issues (my trigger is an ocd like obsession thinking about my symptoms) The node issues began about several days after the bites at the beginning of November... The sore throat started at the same time as the swollen nodes, but after I started to take the crypt. (in mid December) tincture my throat improved a lot...(I gargle then swallow) The stiff neck is better and improved, but not gone, after I started taking the crypt. tincture. The headaches and behind the eye discomfort began several days after the bites in early November and comes and goes... The flat rashes began in mid December and the pimple type rash I've had for a long time, but after the tick bites they popup in new locations (used to get them only on the chest and now they are also on my arms, shoulders and neck) The light head/difficulty concentrating began a few days after the bites in early November... Depression has been an issue since c diff but now it is much more intense and became severe in early December....It peeks early in the morning...hand in hand with the anxiety....
I notice an increase in symptom intensity in the morning after I take all of my remedies (I take and do everything after I eat) Now today, I ran out of the house early for fire calls and did not take or do anything. I noticed I was feeling ok, the best day I've had in a couple of weeks.... Light head/dizziness kicking in - all of a sudden...
Are there herbs that anyone takes for anxiety and depression ?
Thank you Traveler, Alyeska, Girlie, Casa11 and KB69....Hope I did not forget anyone ! Bless you all....

I’m almost positive that you said you’ve cut out sugar, right? For me that was really a problem causing night sweats. I’m not sure what’s causing mine now unless it’s a leftover sugar reaction from the holidays. I sure hope they go away soon. If you haven’t cut out sugar (though I think you have) try that for about a week. It usually helps me. I guess that would also include a lot of carbs. I try to stay away from most of them too.
I’ve never had a rash that I know of. I feel like you really need to see an LLMD to figure that out. You know it’s not bug bites in this weather, right?
I definitely have had the constant headaches for over a year, but they’re mostly better now. At least they’re not daily like they used to be, that constant feverish feeling that never seems to go away.
Depression, anxiety, brain fog just seem to be all of the time now. The anxiety is awful when I’m trying to go to sleep and when I wake up. Mornings before I even leave bed are very bad and late at night when I’m having insomnia. I’ve had to start going to sleep with the TV on for distraction so that I don’t think. I used to be able to read and usually had two or three books going at one time, but I’m having trouble focusing enough to read much lately unless it’s a magazine. The depression comes and goes. I hide it pretty well. Seriously, anyone with my oldest son would be depressed, so I guess I can’t tie that to Lyme! Lol!
Some people have suggested chamomile to me to calm down, but that doesn’t seem to do much. I’m still using big pharma drugs (clonazepam) for my sleep disorder and major anxiety. I don’t take it very often for that. I know it’s very easy to abuse, so I’m very careful.
About the $850 for the appointment... will prices go down once you become a patient and the $850 is only for the initial appointment? If this person is good, would it be worth it for just an initial appointment since Traveler said it’s not that out of range? I’ve been going to my guy so long that I don’t even know what he charges for the first one. I guess I shouldn’t be so harsh to judge. If you look at some of the MDs that have lost their licenses for treating Lyme patients, maybe it’s not so bad IF they’re seeing results. My brother (who wants me to do the vitamin C IV) basically said do whatever you need to get your health back. I just don’t get it that this stuff isn’t covered by insurance. I can’t believe the insurance companies have gotten away with it for so long! Mine actually paid some for the antibiotics for more than the required amount of time, so I’m grateful for that.
Ok, I feel like I may be starting to ramble. I said some extra prayers for you at Mass last evening. I have a CRAZY busy schedule these next two weeks, so I may not be able to check in as often. The kids go back to school Tuesday, so hopefully I’ll be able to concentrate a little better then and actually get every kid and myself where we’re supposed to be on time. I wish I had a little more energy while they’re all still home.
Hang in there! I’ll continue sending prayers your way!

My sweating is almost non-existent now (only happens once in a while - and it's a mild sweat in the morning) - since the months of Mepron for Babesia. I used to get an early morning waking anxiety...and it's not happening lately now, either...Seems that the sweating and anxiety were always hand-in-hand for me. They come together in a package deal. Besides the early morning, sometimes I would also get the anxiety and sweating in the evening. Nothing triggered it...it would just appear. It's gone now. Re: LLMD prices. I know Dr. J clinic (Washington, DC) charges more for the first appointment. (I think it's $899) but it is 2-3 hours long. Then after the initial consult it's supposed to go down to around $699. Third and subsequent are either $399 or $499. I don't know if the subsequent appts are only one hour long. I will know more soon - I'm planning a trip there...It's a loooonnnnngggg way to go - across the continent.

Okay, so it seems that most of your symptoms have been with you pretty much from the start, right? Am I reading that correctly? If this is correct, then you do have issues with detoxing properly, and I would really, really encourage you to delve into this deeply - if we can't detox good, we are going to be left to really struggle through the majority of our time in treatment. If we can't detox good, we can't handle treatments well - it's really that simple. The hard part? Finding what we each need to do to help our body the most with detoxing, as it's like treatments, everyone needs a something a little different. Is your doctor very knowledgeable about detoxing? If so, there is some testing that can be done, or it can be from mainly trial and error. Most MD's aren't very knowledgeable about detoxing though, it's usually a Naturopath or some other type of alternative medicine doctor that will understand more - but with that being said, I'm no longer surprised when ANY type of doctor doesn't think detoxing is all that important. Until you have had a serious need to help your detoxing pathways, they just don't really understand the difference it makes, I guess. We can be of help with you finding what you need to help your detoxing, most likely as well though. Just let us know if you need our help! As for the herbs I use for depression/anxiety - I use/have used avena sativa, hops tincture, Melissa Supreme, Motherwort, as well as a few pharma drugs in the beginning. What I have found though, is most of my depression and serious anxiety actually comes from inflammation and/or too high of toxin levels. So, I also employ turmeric (with black pepper), ginger root, bromelain, and passion vine tincture. If I can keep my inflammation and pain down, my depression and anxiety are easier to control. As far as the headaches go and how to determine which infection is causing them - it's a little tricky, but the best descriptions of the headaches from Bartonella and Babesia that I have found are in this article, which I've posted before: A Deep Look at the Symptoms of Six Major Lyme-Related Infections There's too much information to share here, so I encourage you to read over it, and save the article as a bookmark or something so you can take a look at it any time you need to. Alyeska, Actually, they could still be bug bites. Bugs move inside our homes when they can during bad weather - they like the comfort we have too!!! And, do remember, just because it's cold outside doesn't mean there are no bugs outside. Whether they are active enough to find and bite a human is the question. Those bugs all hide under leaf litter (leaves on the ground) and it acts like a big ole snuggly quilt for them, add snow on top, it's like turning on the heat for them! So we do need to be aware of these things as well.

I’m with you, Acres and Girlie. I'm so very glad to hear that you are still making progress, Girlie!!! That's awesome!

Hi, Yes, I need help with figuring out proper detoxing ! Regarding symptoms, you are correct, they generally started a few days after the bites....
Thank you for that article....I do not seem to fit into anyone completely (bits and pieces of several coinfection symptoms seem to apply)
I have an appt. with my Integrative doctor on Friday and will ask, but I am not confidant they will be up to speed regarding detoxing.... I now believe getting information from people who have done it, the trials and error and success with detoxing and treatment efforts is the best approach to learning....MD's are useless, my Intergrative doctor office dabble in natural remedies, but they are not really lyme literate (Friday, I am going to grill them with questions, so it will be a turning point one way or another, but I am not optimistic)
Yesterday I discovered a new type of rash on my chest....Just a red area w/o bumps, and it is spreading, as of today....Also the rash is located at the same location where the nights sweats were the worst....
Thanks for the anxiety/depression & anti inflammatory herbs. I will investigate further and purchase what I believe might help....
No sweats the past 2 nights and most other symptoms are quite at the moment except the achy swollen glands and rashes....The under jaw glands seem less puffy today...Maybe the red root is kicking in or my protocol is starting to see results ? I have no idea, just hopeful...
Thank you, Scott

Hang in there, Acres!! This is the hardest part - figuring out which infections you are having the worst time with, figuring out detoxing for yourself, and how and what to best support your body. As you understand, we each have our own weaknesses and strengths in healing and in detoxing, so what I though I'd do to help, is list what I do for detoxing and why - and what I have learned about healing these infections, and you can then go through it and see what may apply to you. I sure hope this helps you out! With the experience that I had personally, and what I've watched others go through over the last 10 years I've been 'involved' with Lyme and company, here is what I believe needs to happen for many of us to heal: a)Detoxing - gene mutations, multiple tick-borne infections and more can have a big impact on our ability to detox. I have not had any of the gene mutation testing done, although I do seem to have the same kind of issues as those that do - so I figured it was best for me to assume that I did and work to get my body to detox much better. a. It took a lot of diet changes as things with my body changed - these are always very specific to each person. b. I use a foot soak (not nearly as often as I should any more) - this is a more gentle way of detoxing the whole body. c. dry skin brushing, this allows the skin to get into helping us detox - it's the largest organ (yes, it's an organ!) and there's no reason to leave it out! d. making sure my bowels moved at least once a day (sorry if it's TMI!) We move a LOT of toxins through our intestines, so making sure that things move through as quickly as they are supposed to is highly beneficial - otherwise those toxins just get reabsorbed back into the body. e.pushing myself to drink at least 64 ounces of lemon water each and every day, do be sure to rinse your mouth well after each glass, lemon is hard on the tooth enamel. f. liver/gall bladder flushes (all natural), as needed (I can provide my recipe if you wish) g. oil pulling with just a few drops of high quality tea tree oil, h. taking activated charcoal, as needed, but do watch for constipation. i. Alpha lipoic acid, this is the precursor to glutathione, which is a really good detoxer - mainly for the liver. j. Quercetin, helps with cytokines and inflammation in the intestines. k. turmeric, helps with inflammation throughout the body. l. Methyl B-12 and methyl folate, these are my supplements for my methylation issues that I have. m. Dandelion tincture, liver detoxer. n. red root tincture, lymph cleanser. o. Yogi brand detox tea (original flavor), overall body detoxing, but hits liver and kidneys. p. I added cytokine remodulators, and then realized the one that I needed the most was Red clover root, which helps my spleen inflammation. q. and keeping the amount of stress in my life at a bare minimum. I have used apple cider vinegar to help with detoxing as well - it's really good, but started making my stomach issues worse, so I stopped using it daily and only use it occasionally when I know I need a boost in my detoxing for just a day or two. You can find some really good detoxing suggestions in the "New to Lyme?" thread that sits at the top of the forum. And this is another really good resource for detoxing ideas for Lyme patients: Tired of Lyme - detox methods But, there is such a thing as over detoxing. This happens when we move more toxins than our body is capable of processing out effectively. Many toxins are stored in our tissues, and by detoxing, we move them to the bloodstream where we can process them out of our bodies through the lymph system, then on to the liver and kidneys as so on. We have to be sure to add in more detoxing routines slowly and carefully, or we will end up herxing just like we had never been detoxing. This article helps to explain that some: Tired of Lyme, 4 reasons why you still feel bad despite detoxing b)Supporting the body functions/systems. We have to have the body working at it's peak performance to heal from something as devastating as these infections. Supporting any gland, organ, body system that is struggling will allow the body to switch it's 'concentration' from just trying to function over to healing. c) Raise the immune function. Many legitimate Lyme researchers now believe that it's the lowered immune function that determines who gets chronic Lyme and who heals right away. We already know that Lyme lowers the immune function and when a person has Bartonella and/or Babesia, the immune function is further compromised, so to heal we must raise our immune function. d) Lastly, oddly enough, are anti-infective treatments. Many of us have experienced treatment failures, so we can see that the treatments aren't the only thing we need to have - there has to be more to the equation, but anti-infective treatments are very important!! Lyme bacteria are one of the most complicated bacteria! Although it takes only hours or days for most bacteria to replicate, Lyme bacteria only replicates in the body every few weeks.

Hello, Had the flu....Thought lyme and friends were working overtime, but then my wife became sick as well and we knew it was a nasty flu.. Anyway thank you for this reply !!!! I detox with some of the items on the list and will be adding some very slowly... My integrative doctor is on board with the herbal treatment, but took more blood for a zillion different virus tests.... I called my herbalist and had a very honest, serious discussion and decided to continue to talk to her.... Tried acupuncture once so far but will go 3 times next week.....We shall see if it helps....
So this is what I have decided to do for my protocol : Stopped crypt. and thymex. Very slowly add cats claw, sida acuta, continue red root and add burdock, cleavers and figwort, again very very slowly. Add okra pepsin for my gut which the crypt seemed to disrupt...Adding eluethro. after I see what happens with the other herbs... As far as detoxing goes : Continue foot bathes, lemon water, dry brush with shower, ginger and yogi teas, acv with the mother. I already take quercetin for an enlarged protstate and will add just about everything on your list slowly and see what works for my system.... I am a work in progress.... Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
