Hi, Has anyone had success using acupuncture in conjunction with herbs to treat lyme and co-infections ? I was thinking about trying it. I used it for headaches with some success and the place I went to treats fire service folks very well (they eat the co-pay). I am thinking, it cannot hurt, but was just looking for someone with any experience with the treatment.... Thanks, Scott

Personally, I would have never made it through my first set of treatments without acupuncture!! But, I do have to say that whoever is doing the acupuncture MUST have tons of experience in it, so they know if they are helping the body to detox, or just helping with some pain (for example). I've talked with some Lyme patients that have had horrible experiences because their practitioner didn't know that they were actually helping the body to detox more (which increased the herx too much for those people).
Since my practitioner was in charge of both my acupuncture and my treatment, she was very in tune with what my body needed, and what it didn't. So, with a very highly experienced and highly educated practitioner, I would encourage you to give it a try!!

Hi Scott, I'm glad you brought this up. What are you hoping to target with acupuncture?
I used to go when I was trying to treat neck/elbow pain, which I later learned was Lyme. The treatments helped relieve my pain temporarily. Now that I know I have Lyme, I'm hoping to work with my acupuncturist on opening up detox pathways.
That said, I appreciate your note, Traveler, as I know there is a balance to strike there. Trav, did you work with your acupuncturist on pain and/or detox and/or other? I'm curious to know all the things it can help with (and thus what you're hoping it will help you with, Scott).
My acupuncturist himself had Lyme this past year, and has treated a lot of Lyme patients. Will let you know how it goes - I see him next week.
Take Care, Kelly

Take Care, Kelly Yes, my practitioner used acupuncture to help with nearly everything - pain, detoxing, to help with my intestinal cramps, migraines, nausea and more. I'm not sure that she didn't use acupuncture in ways to help every aspect of my health. I had ear tacks as well as 'regular' acupuncture, often called Auriculotherapy (also auricular therapy). I was helped with my healing and with my herxing by acupuncture - but this takes a very highly experienced acupuncture therapist to know what will cause further herxing and what will help - but I still recommend it.

Hi, I am going try the acu at the location I mentioned earlier....I will ask them about lyme, coinfections, lymph system, herxing etc....if I do not think they are experienced enough I will find someone around here with the skills.... What I really need is relief for the neck aching, fatigue (feel ill) and the lymph system as the ones in front of my ears are now swollen as well.... My Herbalist thinks the lymph issue is due to some success in fighting off the bacteria (with herbs and supplements I am taking)....
Thanks, Scott

Thanks, Scott Honestly, they don't need to know a lot about Lyme and the related infections, as long as they know how to treat chronic infections, and help the body through it. They should do things that seem odd, like 'read' your tongue, feel the different pulses in the body and other things to know what areas need the most help. If you combine that with your understanding of what your body is in need of right now (detoxing in general, with emphasis on the lymph system, liver and other areas they feel may be congested), you should be able to get good help with those issues. Please do let us know how the appt goes!!

Slightly off topic ( but not really) , my dog , Pirate , had Lyme really badly - she got it as a pup , and just couldn't shake it. She had been to 3 vets( including a homeopathic one) and on over 4 full courses of doxy. She was on an excellent homemade diet , and all kinds of supportive supplements too. Nothing helped.
She was so sick I really thought she was going to die. She was so ill we had to rule out cancer & other nasty stuff before proceeding with any treatment. But it was "just " Lyme.
I took her to this awesome vet who practices TCM as well as regular western medicine ( along with lots of other stuff) . She did the acupuncture along with another course of doxy & some TCM pills ( only one course ).
First of all, you could tell Pirate really LIKED the acupressure , and she started having improvements really quick. We continued treatments over several months ( after compleating the doxy & TCM meds) . Maybe a total of 6 months ? ( give it take) That's all it took for her to become completely well. I was amazed at the difference the acupuncture made. I truly believe it saved her life.
Of course, she's since passed away ( not from Lyme) and I miss her so very much... but going through that the experience with her definitely convinced me about the potential benefits of acupuncture. She never had another reoccurrence or relapse.
I've often wished I could find a practitioner who I really trust to work on me, because I think it could make all the difference. Really wish I could just go to the vet.. ( haha)
I think Traveler made a good point though, about finding someone good , because I did have one attempted treatment on myself through some supposedly decent acupuncturist & it was really really bad. So bad I'd never go back to that person. And I've been nervous to try another without a recommendation from someone I know!
I hope you've found a good practitioner & it is helpful for you! Can't wait to hear your experience !

This is fascinating. I can't wait to hear how it goes, Scott. I have absolutely no experience in this area except one friend told me that it helped her greatly with her hip pain. She thought she'd need a hip replacement, and she was only in her early 40's. She had acupuncture and said the pain was completely gone.
I never even thought of this for Lyme. This groups is constantly opening my eyes!
Casa, I agree with you about the vets. They are ON IT with Lyme! It's pretty sad that the vets are more Lyme literate than most doctors.

I tease my Vet's that next time I get Lyme, I'm just coming to them - they don't appreciate the joke much, but still giggle about it. They are completely appalled at what humans have to go through - even their testing is more reliable than ours!!! I have one dog that has had Lyme (complete with a bulls eye) 3 times so far, and I told the vet each time when I made the appointment to bring him in that he had Lyme. The first time, they doubted I knew what I was talking about - but that's when they learned of my own history with these diseases. The second time, they did question me on it over the phone to be sure, but had the abx waiting for me at the front desk when I went in. The third time (LOL), no questions asked, and the receptionist told me that they were told if I call in with a report that one of my dogs has Lyme - to just relay the message and tell me that the meds would be waiting for me. Between the first and third time my dog had Lyme, we of course, have had plenty of vet visits and they have learned that I can take a dog home immediately after surgery and give them better care than they can (I'm available night and day...) there. So, now that they trust me to know what I'm talking about - it's a very easy relationship - but, I still won't allow my dogs (or any other animals in my care) to get the Lyme vaccine. I still don't believe that the science that is being followed is good enough to determine an effective vaccine - I mean, we don't even have reliable tests yet, although the testing for animals is more accurate than for humans and has been for a number of years. Anyway, back to humans (LOL) - here is a site that may prove to be useful in finding an Acupuncture doctor: Acufinder They generally list a number of details about the practitioner that you can look into. And I recently came across this and wanted to post it here! Holistic doctors 247 "Find a holistic Doctor, Dentist or Veterinarian in the United States or Canada. Select a doctor offering office visits only, house calls or consultations via telemedicine." I even found a holistic Vet that does telemedicine!!!

Thanks, Scott Hi again, Scott! I went to my LLMD today and asked what he thought about acupuncture. He is all for it! He says that he's had patients say it helps with pain and that some have had a lot of die off from it, so he's sure it's doing SOMETHING. I was so happy to hear that and couldn't wait to tell you! I really trust this doc, so it makes me feel better about the whole idea of acupuncture. He couldn't explain it since he's an MD and biochemist and knows very little about Eastern medicine, but he's open-minded and one of the smartest people I've ever met. Good luck! I sure hope it really helps with everything. I can't wait to hear how everything goes. I'm praying for some relief for you! Alyeska
