I used to write these out all the time for people, because it just didn't make sense to them. Now I have a document that I can use instead of typing it all out! YAY!!! But, if you still have questions, then we can likely help with making more sense of it all. My comments are in parenthesis.
Borrelia burgdorferi / Lyme Western Blot Bands
**[Bands 18, 23, 31, 34, 37, 39, 83 and 93 are specific for Bb]**
IgM - Positive Bands
**18 kDa. Bb flagellin fragment (this only shows that you have spirochetal bacteria - there's not a lot of them, and you can be tested for them as well - see this article:Britannica.com - spirochete bacteria family
**23 kDa. Early immunogenetic band associated with European strains and Erythema migrans rash. (OspC 25 kDa is specific for Bb)
28 kDa. OspD. (Specific for Bb.)
30 kDa. OspA substrate binding protein. Cross reacts with mycoplasma
**31 kDa. OspA (specific for Bb), LATE usually 1 or more years after initial infection from the American strain from Lyme Conneticut
**34 kDa. OspB (specific for Bb)
**37 kDa. FlaA gene product. (specific for Bb)
**39 kDa. Bb kDa BmpA (specific for Bb)
41 kDa. Flagellar protein B.FlaB
45 kDa. ``... confirmed the importance of the 42- to 45-kDa antigens as early persistent and specific markers for HGE infection.``
58 kDa (not GroEL). Cross reacts with Babesia, HGE & HME, Bartonella and is also seen in Epstein Barr infections. Also B. garinii causes severe neurological symptoms. Garinii is marked by p58 on WB in Asia (China) and Australia.
66 kDa. P66 Oms66 Hsp outer/integral membrane protein. Cross reacts with E. coli.
83 kDa. p83 (Specific for Bb) High molecular mass protein
**93 kDa. Bb kDa an immunodominant protoplasmic cylinder antigen, associated with the flagellum (specific for Bb]
IgG- Positive Bands
**18 kDa. Bb flagellin fragment
**23 kDa Early immunogenetic band associated with European strains and Erythema migrans rash.(OspC 25 kDa is specific for Bb)
30 kDa. OspA substrate binding protein. Cross reacts with mycoplasma.
**31 kDa. OspA (specific for Bb), LATE usually 1 or more years after initial infection from the American strain from Lyme Connecticut (I had not heard this previously, it needs to be checked out though - I'm working on it!)
**37 kDa. FlaA gene product. (specific for Bb)
**39 kDa. Bb kDa BmpA (specific for Bb)
41 kDa ``... confirmed the importance of the 42- to 45-kDa antigens as early persistent and specific markers for HGE infection.`
58 kDa (not GroEL). Cross reacts with Babesia, HGE & HME, Bartonella and is also seen in Epstein Barr infections. Also B. garinii causes severe neurological symptoms. Garinii is marked by p58 on WB in Asia(China) and Australia.
66 kDa. P66 Oms66 Hsp outer/integral membrane protein. Cross reacts with E. coli
**83 kDa. p83 (Specific for Bb) High molecular mass protein
**93 kDa. Bb kDa an immunodominant protoplasmic cylinder antigen, associated with the flagellum (specific for Bb)
----
BAND 58 -The problem with this band is Lyme specificity. We see it with standard co-infections (Babesia, HGE & HME, Bartonella) also seen in Epstein Barr infections. Our estimate from personal studies is less than 80% specificity. This was probably a re-bite with re-infection. If the IgM or IgG had 31 kDa, 34 kDa or 83-93 kDa it is fairly good conformation of past infection along with a current one. FROM IGENEX. New data show Band 30 cross reacts with mycoplasma. 66 is associated with E. coli.
