Hi All! I do hope that everyone is defrosted from the extended winter weather by now - or nearly so!
I wanted to start off by talking some about Astragalus, because, well, it's got a bad rap for no apparent reason - other than fear of the unknown.
I've been using astragalus for the last 4 years, at 3,000 mgs daily, broken into 3 doses daily (as per Buhner's suggestions). I also have autoimmune issues with psoriasis, and this is the combination of issues that everyone panics about. Buhner warns that in SOME people, it MAY exacerbate (make worse for those with brain fog) the autoimmune issues. But, this is not the case for everyone that uses it - and for those that don't because of the fear factor, I believe they are missing out on a very beneficial herb. Let me explain.....
I've been studying adaptogens in school - I bought a recommended book and have really embraced these herbs now! They are truly amazing herbs for those that need that kind of help. They help the body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic functions, and help restore balance. They increase the body's resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors and provide a defense response to acute or chronic stress. They are unique in their ability to restore balance of the endocrine hormones, modulate the immune system, and allow the body to maintain optimal homeostasis (balance).
So, what specifically does astragalus do for the body? Get ready to be surprised!!
It's 'leading' application is Immune tonic (tonic, meaning it's very gentle and considered safe for daily use) and heart tonic.
Protects against oxidative damage.
Benefits lungs & entire respiratory system - strengthens lungs & used to treat people for asthma.
Chemoprotective/radioprotective, and has antitumor properties.
Antioxidant - protects against oxidative stress.
Immune system stimulating and often included in cancer protocols.
Cardioprotective.
Helps to regulate blood pressure.
Useful for treating people with angina & mild congestive heart failure.
Supports digestive health - used for chronic diarrhea, chronic ulcers, and hemorrhoids.
*Modulates/enhances immune systems (modulate = bring into balance).
Antibacterial and antimicrobial activity, antiviral activity - broad spectrum (covering many strains) tonic for people who are run down and need an overall immune system boost.
Used for long term strengthening of the immune system and it's activiyy may improve resistance to cols and flu. Also used to help a variety of viral conditions, including
herpes, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Hepatitis, and HIV. Increases T-cell activity, NK-cell activity, and interferon production.
Hepaprotective (protective of the liver), benefits integumentary system (skin, hair, nails), treats disorders of the skin including burns, also has been used for skin tumors.
Supports kidneys and urinary dysfunction, mild diuretic.
Anyone else using this wonderful herb? Any one else want to know more?
