So, I'm a bit prejudiced on this herb, as it has saved me when my adrenals crashed and continues to help me cope.
Ashwahandha is another adaptogen, so this information is from the herbal school I attend as well as this book for more in depth learning:
The Herbal Academy
Adaptogens, David Winston and Steven Maimes
The one thing to keep in mind, is that not every adaptogen will work well for every person - we must match the right herb to the desired need and person.
Ashwagandha benefits:
Leading application: Calming adaptogen, relieves muscle pain.
Other ways of support that Ashwagandha delivers:
Adrenal support
Anti-inflammatory actions
Anti-tumor properties
Antioxidant properties
Anti-anxiety
Anti-depressant
Anabolic activity (building up rather than the tearing down as a part of the aging process)
Calming to the CNS (Central Nervous System)
Reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis or RA.
Used to treat Fibromyalgia, Polymyositis and Rheumatoid arthritis - reduces
pain and inflammation associated with these conditions
Fights fatigue and increases energy, endurance and strength
Anti-inflammatory
Enhances brain function and mental clarity, prevent atrophy of nerve cells in brain
Modulate and enhance immune system
May inhibit growth of cancers of breast, lungs and colon
Chemoprotective & Radioprotective
Cardio protective
Improved sleep
Stabilizing effects on the HPA axis - aids in modulating levels of
adrenalaline, noradrenaline and cortisol
Helps with hypothyroidism (stimulating to the thyroid in both animal and human studies)
Diuretic
Aids in musculoskeletal system health
Benefits male reproductive system, but used by both sexes
Aid the body in sleeping - calming, traditionally used for insomnia and nervous conditions- important tonic for those "stressed out"
Helps to increase energy and enhance digestion
*taken as a powder in milk or mixed with molasses (rich in iron) cam treat iron-deficient anemia
Botanical name: Withania somnifera
Part used: root
Properties: Adaptogen, anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, immune amphoteric amphoteric, anti tumor, nervine, antispasmodic, mild astringent and diuretic.
Herb/drug interactions: Can enhance or increase the effect of barbiturates.
This can be an odd herb to work with, because many that find the most benefits for adrenal fatigue will take it just before bed to help them sleep and it works well for them - and yet, those with more serious adrenal issues find it more beneficial to take it first thing in the morning and then again before 2 pm. I have to follow the latter schedule for it to help me.
