I tried all those little tricks too, and my anxiety was just too much for me to get through. I was on the Xanax for about 2 years, I believe. I stopped when I found my TCM doc that helped me heal that first time. She had 'tricks' that worked - acupuncture and herbs! LOL! I was going in every week for acupuncture at first, then slowly moved to every other week, then every 3 weeks. We stayed at every 3 weeks for nearly a year to help me deal with all the symptoms I was dealing with.
When my anxiety was the worst, I would just shut down emotionally and physically. Everything in life was suddenly so overwhelming that I just wanted to 'leave life' - not tempted to commit suicide (tried that when I was younger), but I certainly had no desire to stick around any longer, but I had two kids still at home, and there was no way I was leaving them to fend for themselves in this world at that point in time. It was my kids and my 'current' hubby that pulled me through it all. I simply wasn't ready to really leave them - fortunately. There is life on the other side of this.
Also, is cannabis legal in your state? There are strains that will very specifically help with being able to eat.
I have to 'sneak' calories in, as I just don't like to eat any more for a number of reasons/dysfunctions - or I gain weight because my body is extremely sensitive to the amount of calories I get - if I don't get enough daily, my body goes into starvation mode and I simply can't loose weight no matter what my diet is like. So I drink pomegranate/cranberry juice when I take my herb powders and tinctures, I eat avocados in my salads, use olive oil and coconut oil exclusively and things like that.
I'm so sorry about your husband's fear about you leaving! That's got to be rough. Yes, my hubby and I have been through quite a bit, but he's now getting some much needed surgeries and is already doing much better. My hubby's issues are more from 'wear and tear' on the body - and the blood clotting condition, Factor V (5). I worry (a lot!) about brain bleeds, but honestly the only time we have had to really be concerned is when he falls, and that's getting less and less now, fortunately. No doubt when the spouse is also sick/disabled that the stress levels can really soar!!
Maybe you can find a combination of herbs that will help lower your anxiety, and then use the Xanax for the 'breakthrough' anxiety, when things just get really bad? I'm so sorry, Patty!!!!
